Websites for independent shops and cafés

For boutiques, florists, gift shops, cafés, bakeries and roasters. Brochure sites from £400, Shopify stores from £600, and a free mock-up of your homepage first.

Independents win on personality, and a template site hides it. Your website should feel like walking through your door, then make it easy to visit, order or buy.

I'm Matthew, a web designer and developer in the Midlands. I build fast, mobile-first sites with one clear next step, and you deal with me from first call to launch.

What your site needs to do

  1. 01

Opening times and menus as real text

Not a PDF or a photo of a menu. Text loads quickly on a phone, and Google can read it.

  2. 02

Selling online, if you want to

A Shopify store from £600, or WooCommerce from £800, with collection pages, click-and-collect or local delivery where you offer it.

  3. 03

    Something that brings people back

This week’s window, today’s bakes, new stock: one living part of the homepage that gives regulars a reason to check.

  4. 04

Your Instagram, working for the site

Your best posts on the site, and a site good enough to link to from your bio.

  5. 05

    Find us, park, visit

A map, parking notes and accessibility details, because they’re what people check before setting off.

Wren & Mabel

The hero is the shopfront itself, dressed with this week’s window and priced on handwritten swing tags, which gives regulars a reason to check back.

Kiln Street Café

A kiln-arch chalkboard listing what came out of the oven and when, with sold-out bakes crossed off, just like the board on the counter.

Questions

Should I use Shopify or WooCommerce?

Shopify is simpler to run day to day, with a monthly fee. WooCommerce has no platform fee but needs a little more looking after. I’ll recommend one based on how you work.

Can I add products myself?

Yes. Both platforms let you add and edit products, and I show you how at handover.

I already have a shop on Etsy or Instagram. Why have a site too?

Your own site has no marketplace fees, keeps your customers’ details with you and gives you a home that a platform change can’t take away.
