How much does a small business website cost?

An honest answer from a working web designer, with my own prices so you have real numbers to compare against.

Anything from a few hundred pounds to several thousand.

For a small UK business, a professionally built website typically runs from a few hundred pounds for a simple site to several thousand for a large or bespoke one. My own prices start at £400 for a 5-page site and go up to £2,800 for fully bespoke work, all fixed and agreed before anything starts.

The price depends far less on who builds it than on what it needs to do. Here’s what actually moves the number.

Number of pages. A 5-page site (home, services, about, reviews, contact) is the most common for local businesses. Every extra page needs its own design, words and checking.

Who writes the words. If you supply the text, the cost stays down. If you’d like it written for you, expect to pay per page; mine is £50–£150 a page.

Selling online. A shop adds product pages, a checkout, payments and delivery settings. My Shopify stores start at £600, and WooCommerce at £800.

Bookings and integrations. Linking an existing booking system is quick. Custom forms, calculators or a member area take longer.

Template or custom design. A well-chosen layout adapted to your brand is the affordable route. A design built from scratch around one idea costs more, and is worth it when you need to stand out.

Domain name: your web address, renewed every year. I set it up for £30–£50.

Hosting: where the site lives. Setup is £50, and running costs depend on the platform you choose.

Platform fees: Shopify and some site builders charge monthly. A custom site can avoid these.

Changes after launch: either you edit it yourself, or a care plan covers updates, backups and small edits (mine are £100–£250 a month and entirely optional).

DIY builders such as Wix or Squarespace are the cheapest way to start, with a monthly subscription and your own time. They suit businesses that enjoy doing it themselves.

A freelancer gives you one person from first call to launch, usually at a lower price than an agency for small sites.

An agency brings a team, which makes sense for big sites with lots of moving parts, and costs accordingly.

Whichever you choose, ask for a fixed price, what’s included, how many rounds of changes you get, and who owns the site at the end.

Questions

Why is a cheap website sometimes expensive?

If it doesn’t work well on a phone, loads slowly or makes it hard to call you, it costs you enquiries every week. That loss often adds up to more than the saving.

Do you charge hourly?

No. You get a fixed quote within 24 hours of a short call, so the price doesn’t creep up.

How do payments work?

A 50% deposit to start, and the rest when the site is finished and you’re happy with it.

Can I see what I’d get before paying?

Yes. I’ll build a free mock-up of your homepage first, so you can judge the work before spending anything.
